Author Spotlight Series: Taylor Hightower & “Snack Attack: Maya and Her Snack Filled Sleepover”

In Snack Attack: Maya and Her Snack Filled Sleepover (2022), it’s Maya's birthday sleepover and she wants to eat all of her favorite sweet snacks. That's every child’s birthday dream, right? But, Maya's wishes quickly take a turn when she's reminded that eating too many treats before bed can cause nightmares! This tale gives readers of all ages a nostalgic reminder that all eating habits are to be balanced.

Author Taylor Hightower spoke with Young Authors Publishing’s Assistant Editor, Brooke Shannon, to share her writing takeaways, literary influences, and how it feels to share her work with readers.

Brooke Shannon: What inspired you to write your book?

Taylor Hightower: Author Raina Telgemeier inspired me to write my book. Two of my favorite books are written by Telgemeier: Sisters and Smile.

BS: What was one takeaway about writing you discovered while writing your book?

TH: Writing takes courage and bravery! You’re openly sharing your ideas with others.

BS: Who is your favorite author and why?

TH: Raina Telgemeier because her books have inspired me to write my own. I have always wanted to write my book in elementary school and wondered if I ever could. Now, I have and know I can!

BS: What do you hope readers will take away from your book?

TH: I hope that readers will enjoy my book and write a book as well if they want to.

BS: What advice would you give to young authors or creatives?

TH: The advice I would give young authors is that it may be hard at first, but it gets better when you continue writing your book!
